TRIATHLON AND TRESHOLD TRAINING II

I had posted before related to the subject mentioned above.

I said in the previous parts in the blog and in this series.  One needs to practice cadence, technique and speed steadily until one is able to do the cadence and speed she/he would like to have for competition; rest two minutes and try again. Five minutes is very difficult to sustain without lowering speed, but that would be the objective; rest two minutes and try again.  Once the speed drops, stop and rest two minutes. Do eight of them or until you accomplish the distance you want to compete in. Eight repetitions would be the gold standard to run a 10k at a good speed.  If you are beginner, it takes around three years of training intensively to accomplish the strength to start training at the speed we would like to compete with.  Life is very specific; one lives according to what one practices.  The same thing for training, one’s performance depends on the quality of one’s practice. 26 mars 2012 TRIATHLON PHYSIOLOGY FOR DUMMIES AND THE TENDENCY TOWARD THE MEAN

I even scanned a page of Carmichael´s book to give you empirical data related to resting after the workout mentioned above.  This is how you train “neuronal threshold.” The most important training to run, swim or bike fast.  You can do “lactate threshold” without cadence, technique and speed but that does not help you to go fast.  During the days you do not do neuronal threshold, train your neurons to keep high cadence. 29 mars 2012 TRIATHLON PHYSIOLOGY FOR DUMMIES AND THE TENDENCY TOWARD THE MEAN
As you can see, a "sophisticated athlete" is needed to avoid saying an educated athlete, to follow this type of training.  An athlete committed to improvement on daily basis.  An athlete knowledgeable about recovery and nutrition and able to follow plans without “feeling sacrificed.”
You can make many mistakes in training and still get good results when you have this "sophisticated athlete."  The real problem is to create this entity from scratch.

TRIATHLON AND THRESHOLD TRAINING

As it was said on the previous post:
In Medicine, if one does not know the consequences of knowing just a part of the equation related to the problem we are facing it could be pretty dangerous.  People actually die.  Regarding triathlon training is something different, but our training could not have the expected results.  VO2 max is a marker that tells us many things about training but we should know the whole equation in order to possess useful information.  VO2 max could have prognostic value if we know the whole equation.  8 sept. 2012 VO2 MAX AND TRIATHLON
I will start with a short history regarding our experimentation with lactate.  We started measuring lactate to our triathletes and never found a lactate below 2mmols/liter before starting training.  We checked the system more than twice looking for mistakes and accepted for a while that the value was two as a baseline.  Over the course of years, we found out that the adolescents measured never had a full sleep and sometimes were out at night.  Oops! Sometimes measuring baseline lactate helps to know that our athletes are not sleeping well or not resting, whatever you want to believe.  Lactate was in closer relation to going out at night than the previous day training. In our experience, recovery sleeping is more important than a hard training day in itself.  Good for lactate at baseline!
It is pertinent that what it was mentioned on previous post regarding VO2 max is accurate for lactate also. Lactate was announced in a previous post: 1 avr. 2012 TRIATHLON PHYSIOLOGY FOR DUMMIES AND THE TENDENCY TOWARD THE MEAN
When speaking about lactate, I have to show you a different way of looking at it.  Another language so we can see something else helpful…  In Medicine there are many monuments left for our heroes and at the end it is difficult to see “the real.” Lactate is the most effective transport of energy for our body in the “fight or flight” situation; when the body has an emergency, lactate is produced.  OUR BRAIN NEURONS USE LACTATE AS THE ONLY FUEL to do our daily task. I assume that neurons use it in general as the main fuel. So, lactate is “good.”  We have to produce lactate to get the neuro-fibers firing.  Around 4millimols per liter of blood allows us to finish an Olympic Distance Triathlon at our best pace.  The more tolerance we acquired to lactate the better we are.  Here, it is important to point out that sometimes the cybernetic equilibrium is lost and lactate continues to increase without being used by neurons or other cells (not in the case of Lance Armstrong as you will see below).  Anecdotal, we can say that even if we finish a marathon in “the sweet spot,” our lactate goes up above 10. It means, we have a tolerance to lactate above 4.

Keeping with the promise of speaking another language regarding lactate; the use of lactate by neurons will give us the NEURON THRESHOLD to use lactate.  “Lactate threshold” should be “neuronal threshold” as it has to do with the neurological training mentioned before in a post.  The neurons force the muscles to produce lactate in order to continue their work and stimulate brain neurons for the same matter.

Rate coding of muscle force
The force produced by a single motor unit is determined in part by the number of muscle fibers in the unit. Another important determinant of force is the frequency with which the muscle fibers are stimulated by their innervating axon. The rate at which the nerve impulses arrive is known as the motor unit firing rate and may vary from frequencies low enough to produce a series of single twitch contractions to frequencies high enough to produce a fused tetanic contraction. Generally, this allows a 2 to 4-fold change in force. In general, the motor unit firing rate of each individual motor unit increases with increasing muscular effort until a maximum rate is reached. This smooths out the incremental force changes which would otherwise occur as each additional unit was recruited.[9]…
Practicing cadence improves our “basic neurons” without searching to recruit more muscle fibers.  Improving our “basic neurons” to be stronger is done by increasing “work load (weight).”  The long distance work outs help with the neurological practice.  As long as one spins as one trains, the neurological apparatus is subject to training without involving much of the muscles.  The fastest the cadence, the better it is.  So far, we are away from the muscles.  We are talking about neurons which innervate muscles-using-fatty acids as fuel (“basic neurons”).  We train our neurons to fire “fast.”  The weight load makes the difference; as long as the weight is light we train basically our neurons to fire fast.  Once we increase the weight load we start training the muscle as well as the neurons.
To train at the threshold means to keep the “lactate balance,” between production and utilization around 4 for the majority of the mortals, by increasing work load or cadence.  There is a limit to the utilization of lactate by neurons but the muscles continue to release it and can go up to 14.  The neurons stop and you bonk.  The neurons stop because they fatigue, not because of the lactate.  I read in www.pezcyclignews.com an article by Dr. Cheung, where he mentioned that the single most important predictor for winners was increased tolerance to lactate (paraphrasing).  I will write on how to improve it next time.

VO2 MAX AND TRIATHLON

In Medicine, if one does not know the consequences of knowing just a part of the equation related to the problem we are facing it could be pretty dangerous.  People actually die.  Regarding triathlon training is something different, but our training could not have the expected results.  VO2 max is a marker that tells us many things about training but we should know the whole equation in order to possess useful information.  VO2 max could have prognostic value if we know the whole equation.  We have spoken before regarding this subject: 26 févr. 2012 VO2 MAX IMPROVEMENT AND THE SECOND SIN.

I will use Wikipedia to describe my wording.  What is VO2max?  VO2 max (also maximal oxygen consumption, maximal oxygen uptake, peak oxygen uptake or maximal aerobic capacity) is the maximum capacity of an individual's body to transport and use oxygen during incremental exercise, which reflects the physical fitness of the individual. The name is derived from V - volume, O2 - oxygen, max - maximum. Whoa!  I have read that the value of VO2max does no predict who is going to win.

1)   VO2 max is specific to the muscles used during the process of evaluation.  There are different VO2 max depending on the sport we are practicing and the muscles employed.
2)   Then, we have different VO2 max depending on whether we are evaluating swimming, running or bicycling.
3)   Cadence when running, swimming or cycling is a big variable in the evaluation.
4)   Adaptation over the years to high or low cadence gives different results.

For instance, we have known athletes with high VO2 max, 67 for a female triathlete, who performs poorly due to low cadence training.  In the case mentioned above, we had the same athlete performing a minute a half faster for 5k in triathlon with 60 of VO2 max. Technique comes into play when we speak about performance and VO2 max in order to use the former as prognostic element.  Without evaluating technique the prognostic value of VO2 max is non-existent.

Athletes and coaches are afraid of increasing cadence because they think they could overtrain due to high heart rate, not knowing that heart rate is also related to increase cadence without interfering with recovery/fatigue.  They just need to increase the caloric intake.

It is said that increasing cadence increases oxygen consumption, reason why some coaches advocate low cadence.  This looks like a paradox because we do not take into consideration the type of fibers use and the neurological training needed to run or to cycle at a high cadence, above 220 running and above 105rpm cycling.  When we do a metabolic test, the more oxygen we use the fitter we are.  Increasing cadence augments oxygen consumption because the heart, lungs and legs use more oxygen.  The advantage is the type of fibers used while cycling or running, oxygen consuming fibers, the ones that fatigue until they die, or if there is an oxygen debt.  If we decrease cadence, e.g. to 180 running or 80rpm cycling keeping the same speed, involvement of the other fibers that do not use so much oxygen takes place and fatigue sits in or bonking is a consequence.  What to do with high oxygen consumption in the case of high cadence? Eat more in order to continue exercising.  How much? For a 70kg athlete, 450 calories per hour is the goal, in order to avoid the bonking.  Of course, we need to have a neurological training and anaerobic training to face the competition at a high cadence which I will explain later.  Empirical observations we have with Lance Armstrong and the athletes we have trained.  In some we have a before and an after when changing the cadence, a one subject experimentation. 11 mars 2012 TRIATHLON PHYSIOLOGY FOR DUMMIES AND THE TENDENCY TOWARD THE MEAN

TRIATHLON CYCLING III

In previous parts we spoke about triathlon cycling and mentioned about Coggan’s research done on cycling.  He has charts done on all kind of cyclists so he can calculate a profile for a specific race.

30 août 2012 TRIATHLON BICYCLING II

“Taking the above example, our competitors are trained to be in a peloton. Being in the peloton is similar in required abilities to a criterium race for somebody competing in a triathlon Olympic format.  This competitor with such abilities is also called all-rounder competitor by Coggan.  Yes, we need a all-rounder cyclist for triathlon at a competitive level. Please read, 27 août 2012 Triathlon Bicycling.  We need to train for that purpose if we want to be in the peloton.”

How can we have a profile if we do not have power meters?  There are some charts developed for trainers that are useful.  They are calculated to be used in flat roads and give insight about the watts used during a time trial.  It is different when drafting, but we can do the testing; and if the male cyclist is able to average 41k per hour in a 20k ride, the competitor is ready to ride with the peloton.  Oops! Except that he needs to generate 900 watts for 5 seconds several times and recuperates in order to be able to run after the bike.  That is why the ironman competitors say that the peaks, normally more than 15 during the race, call for a different type of training for an ITU race.
