We have read things related to the owners of teams
known around the world. They made the headlines: NBA Clippers and Guadalajara
Football Team. Both owners’ issues are
about money. One owner believes that he
could buy anything; the other one, does not want to pay for firing a coach.
Jack Daniels tried hard to explain us about
ECONOMY. Daniels used a translation applying mathematical models
(scientific models), if you wish, to make us see everyday life. Daniels translates into science what could be
explained with everyday language. I will
try to translation his language TO
COMMON SENSE because what Daniels found is about economy, and it is related to
High Performance Sports. Daniels speaks
about the economy of running without mentioning the weight of technique and
cadence on economy because it is very difficult to use mathematical models to
make the point (I have not seen a mathematical model). As a good scientist, he just mentions that
economy places a role on performance.
When trying to improve performance the demands on the environment, athlete, coach, teammates increase exponentially as well as the stress to deal
with such demands. Well-educated
individuals are needed to face without great difficulty the training task and
performing. Daniels mentions that it is
difficult to keep with the program when increasing demands on training because perhaps there are more lesions and
overtraining. But before getting to lesions and overtraining, it is worth
mentioning that no one can create an environment to face stress originated by increasing miles training, improving good quality food in our diet, improving
recovering if he/she is
not prepared to do so. We come back to the concept of education as the first
step to create athletes able to train high volumes and be able to perform well; to have athletes to train high volumes and speed
while keeping technique, is even more difficult.
The stress on athletes, coaches and family increases exponentially as
training volume, speed and technique demands increase. Overtraining and lesions should be understood
in this context of training.
The owners of the Clippers and Guadalajara are the
first ones to fall when the demands of performance are great. The rest of the team follows; lesions and
overtraining are consequences of not being able to tolerate the stress that
most of the time is within the team. The
owners have not been properly educated to stand this kind of stress performance
and make things worse for the team and athletes. “PERFORMANCE
AT A CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL” is not for a chaotic team and the head (owner) plays a
major role, the most vital role.
