Watching the World Championship for swimming where
people is getting faster and faster, made me think about what it has to be done
in order to improve triathlon performance.
Countries are moving at different speeds, but even more stable countries
like the USA is having great improvements in swimming. The Chinese are moving fast for different
reasons but the Europeans are improving as well faster than the Americans. Even if we improve our open-water swimming 30
seconds for the 1,500 meters, we are not improving our overall performance. Katie Ledecky improved 12 seconds from London
Olympics 2012 to Kazan Worlds 2015. If
we can improve 30 seconds the run after the bike the chances of winning improve
dramatically and it is doable.
Looking at Gwen Jorgensen stats we can see that she
improved more than a minute her running after she finished College.

“It started to
hurt about eight or nine kilometres when Gwen (Jorgensen) dropped in a three
minute ‘k’. I really started to feel it after that.”
Jorgensen ran
on for the win in 32:21.
“I didn’t know
what to expect I haven’t really run just a straight 10k for a while so it was
good to come out here close to where I train. I think they are super fun it is
a hard session for us and it gets the speed work in.”
Wellings was
second across the line in 32:56 and claimed the National and state 10km Road
Championships.
Gwen is not only running faster than when she was a
runner in College, but she is not losing her running speed after the swim and
bike. I still remember her when running
at Huatulco soon after she turned pro; she was running like a grasshopper,
without cadence and exhausted after the bike.
Her husband has done a beautiful job helping her with the bike to the
point that she is one of the best biking also.
She proved it keeping up with the first pack in Auckland this year.
