EFFICIENCY IN TRIATHLON CYCLING

Let´s take a look at a graphic from a track racer, performing a Points Race. If we analyze just a minute of the race, it is obvious that efficiency is the greatest factor to improve. In a minute, eight accelerations took place and depending on the rpm where the subject was AT THAT MOMENT the more or less strong acceleration takes place.  The better the subject keeps his rpm baseline up, the less acceleration needed.  Once more, a process of acceleration requires somebody able to understand the need to train and practice high rpm and to limit accelerations regarding power and number during the race (tactic).  So, efficiency will depend on how educated is our competitor.

We have spoken of Lance Amstrong in the past, and regardless of his doping problem which we do not approve, he is an example of improving efficiency during his time competing.

16 févr. 2012  ARMSTRONG, THE GREATEST PRODUCT OF OUR SCIENCE

Lance took seven years to develop his cycling economy, according to the study of Edward Coyle, 2% in seven years (Joyner, MJ and EF Coyle. Endurance exercise performance: the physiology of champions. Journal of Physiology 586:35-44, 2008).  The economy of movement has to do with technique, cadence and the quality of training in general. Greg Bennett mentioned in an interview that it took him four years to improve less than a minute in the 10k of triathlon before Athens, just by improving the economy of running; his VO2 max had a limit.  Macca is another example; he is unable to run below 31 minutes in Olympic triathlons even though he surely has a very high VO2max.  The 80´s are the limit in triathletes.

Accelerations is what wears out the competitors.  Points race is very similar to the peloton encounter in ITU triathlon except that triathlon´s peloton has less accelerations during the race; it is not a rocket science to determine that training should be similar TO TRACK TRAINING FOR A POINTS RACE.  Look at how speed goes up by increasing cadence and how the same goes down when cadence decreases, and the need of the cyclist to accelerate when his cadence drops.  If we teach cyclist to keep cadence up, the acceleration would exist, but not to the degree of increasing power to more than 2000 watts.  The question would always exist, is our athlete coachable or does he have the capacity to learn or to be taught?  This is the limit between the good and the exceptional: EDUCATION.

Triathlon and “Wet Run”

When I first heard this expression and thought about running and what makes people run after finishing the bike and swim in triathlon.  The wet run is real; it is just for intelligent triathletes. As we mentioned in this blog, there are benchmarks that are needed in order to perform in triathlon.  Swimming in 16:30 and biking a 5k on flat surface in 6:45 is necessary to speak of “wet run.”  This post comes after looking at the numbers from Alistair Brownlee´s coach posted by Alfonso Andreu.

Alistair is able to run just 30 seconds slower when competing in triathlon that when checking a 10k running on a track without swimming and biking.  SURE, ALISTAIR BROWNLEE CAN DO A WET RUN, because he warms up while swimming and biking.  It is not his fault that people do not work while swimming and riding the bike; although, he sometimes like to play “cat and mouse” with rivals and starts fast since the beginning.  One needs training swimming and biking efficiency to stay with the pack and be able to do a “wet run.”  Of course, you should know how to run fast to be the winner.

I know elite triathletes that can run faster than Alistair, but they are not efficient while swimming and biking even though they can stay with the pack.  They are unable to have a “wet run” in those conditions.  They can lose up to 4 minutes running if they are unable to swim or bike the benchmarks I mentioned above.

Please read our series of Physiology for Dummies to understand our point better.

ITU CONFERENCES AND TRIATHLON

It has been 3000 years since we have heard the saying: “Nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun
I read just tweets from the conferences.  There is joke in Mexico:  The traditional doctor went to see a community where he worked and decided to try Bamboo as a curative plant.  He decided to give bamboo soups for the critically ill; bamboo salads for cancer; raw bamboo for diarrheas.  He left the village and returned two weeks later.  The villagers were waiting for him with many questions.  Our doctor said to the villagers, how is everybody doing?  The villagers answered:  “everybody died.”  He just paused a moment and said:  “Well, bamboo does not work.”

We need common sense to start a research.  In Mexico, the Mexican Federation tests 400 meters swimming and 1k running to choose talent.  Repeatedly, they have learned that the way of choosing talent does not work.  Since they started with the protocol, born in 1990, almost all of the ones that were able to do the times are gone.  The one staying competing who had the times does not win any local race.  How can you equate 1k of running to the 5k after swimming and biking?  Is this common sense?  It is like the above joke.  Talent is someplace else.
