Triathlon and Technology

A computer programmer came to see me because he was feeling that he was not performing well.  He said that he understands that programming starts with our life and he was not able to clean his own house.  He was aware that keeping things orderly was a requirement to improve and have better options in life.  As a programmer, designing is easier when life has everything in place.  The way he was living was according to a hacker’s life instead of a guy designing programs; it was a lot easier for him to be a hacker than a designer due to his chaos.  The way we are programmed is the way the most expensive and most important human computer we possess works.

Programming starts with the input that directs our goals and model us:

1)   Our heroes will play a great role in how we see life; our judgements will depend on the type of heroes we have.  We will model our heroes.  We recently visited Chetumal (near Cancun) for the Nationals and a taxi driver said to us that somebody called the “Español” was killed three years back, and he was like a heroe for them, helping people trafficking.  For him, the economy was not the same since he died.  High ranking official in the FMTRI said to us that he was proud of every Mexican (TODOS); he was not able to differentiate the everyday blue-collar worker from the corrupted governor.  THIS IS WHAT WE CALL LACK OF BASIC EDUCATION.

2)   Every move will depend on how we are program; we recently saw a guy who climbed four floors to rescue a child hanging from a balcony in Paris.  He was program to do so.  This kind of person is appealing for any team, we would team with him any time.  Macron gave him the French Nationality.  Our team won the relay with children two or four years younger, it was not recognized as the winner because two of them did not comply with age category.  This is not the big problem with how we are programmed, the real problem is that the Mexicans who were present did not want to see the mediocrity of the youth championship and just ignored the winners, concentrating in cheering the second and third places who were 1:30 minutes behind.  THIS IS LACK OF BASIC EDUCATION FOR WINNERS.

Programming starts since the moment we are born.  Did we learn to be winners when growing up or we have to relearn things to improve our programming?  This is the first question we have for our children. The human DNA is an analogic language as well as the software we use (training gives different software), programming should be done very carefully and thinking about goals.  We are not wired digitally.  Programming the best computer and the best technology (brain) is called education.  Garmin is a very good tool to train but the hardware and the software that are in our brain need to be ready first.

Triathlon and Triathlon Yokohama

It is interesting to see the wattage in this race.  Strava is helping with this.  It can be helpful if we want to monitor doping in athletes, the changing of wattage according to training monitoring and performance in race. We know the wattage of Crisanto Grajales during the race 222 watts average; McElroy 344 watts; Iden 333 watts; Pevtsov 277 watts; Viain 247 watts.  We can see who pushed the peloton and the one who drafted.  Grajales drafted Iden; Pevtsov and Viain drafted McElroy and the rest.  In the Bermuda triathlon Alarza produced 335 watts for his sixth place finish, He was in the front pack.  Seeing previous wattage a few years back where wattage was around 360 for second pack or drafting in the first pack, we can see that athletes did not train for a while after the Olympics; their performance is very poor.  Please see our post in this blog:

San Diego and Auckland Triathlons

Different strategies are coming into play in triathlon. Changes come from above to below, hardly any change come from below.  That is the reason why revolutions do not change anything, they come from below to above imposed by force most of the time.  Something moving from above to below is not common, frequent and/or well-accepted; we appreciated what Mr. Brownlee, The Great Champion of Triathlon, said at the finish line interview:
“I didn’t know how fast I was going to run to be honest because it was only literally this week that I felt decent,” Brownlee said of trying to break away on the bike. “I don’t understand why there’s eight to 10 guys in that group and none of those guys finished in the top 10. I don’t know why they’re not pushing on the bike. It doesn’t make sense to me. I tried to get away a little bit; form a group of three or four of us, see if we could get away, but that didn’t work.”

Frodeno's power San Diego and Auckland many years back.

It will take a few months or years to improve biking in triathlon after Rio.  Calculations for cycling in the Tour de France give information about doping; producing more than 400 watts for one hour is suspicious of doping by the rider.  There is already a limit to what a modern cyclist can do with the current training and nutrition.  Strava could be a better follow up than the biological passport in the case of doping, easier and non-invasive; or they could complement each other.
