Triathlon World Series vs Triathlon World Cup

We have a previous post mentioning the difference between a Triathlon World Cup and a Continental World Cup.  What happened in China made me write another post.  Jarrod Shoemaker mentioned the following:
“I guess I like China right? It was an interesting race being at altitude, I have been training in Boulder at the same altitude and I know you cannot drive hard in these conditions. I was smart in the swim, just stayed up there, the bike was interesting, it was so rolling and no one wanted to do much work but equally it was hard to get to the front.

“I definitely feel good, a 5th and a 2nd in World Cup racing this year, I know I have a job to do, it is another level from World Cup to World Series racing, the bike is probably the biggest difference. I am excited for Edmonton, I think it will be fun to see how I go against the best guys but the big goal is Rio so it is baby steps at the moment.”

Jarrod is not a swimmer and had difficulties following the main peloton swimming.  He practiced for years before being able to ride the bike with the main peloton in triathlon.  He finished College being a runner around 14 minutes the 5k.  He won a World Cup and fated after:

We have spoken that the difference between a Continental Cup and a World Cup was the speed riding the bike.  The riding speed in China’s World Cup was as the one we see in a Continental Cup as Jarrod mentioned.  The difference between the females and males riding the bike 40k was just three minutes in China; usually you see six minutes difference in this kind of circuit due to gender difference:

There is a huge difference between a Continental Cup and a World Cup.  The main difference is more than 150 watts average riding the bicycle.  That is the difference in power between Alistair Brownlee and our young elite competitors in a 40k ride of an Olympic distance triathlon.  We thank Felipe Barraza for posting values regarding the Continental Cup at Dallas (2014):

The Dallas’ power output has nothing to do with what is produced in the World Series when Brownlee and Gómez are pulling the leading peloton.  We have shown several measures posted by Jan Frodeno that shows his average during a race, it is well above 350 watts even though he is not leading the first peloton which is going faster.

We will try to answer the above question.  Jan Frodeno has giving us interesting information regarding the effort done during the last two competitions.  For Frodeno, the effort was the same at San Diego and Auckland (changed a wheel and kept with the first pack).  370 watts average during the 40k bike, meaning he had the same power in a hilly course as in the flat course.
Where do we go from here?  If we are aiming to produce world class triathlete we need to improve biking abilities that takes years to improve and start as the Brownlees, since they are kids.  I will give a previous race of Jarrod where the bike segment was flat as in China, same time during biking.  Regarding China, the bike did not have turns as in Dallas.

When the bike becomes faster, Jarrod cannot run after the bike.  It was a little more humid in Dallas.  I am glad to have the internet to be able to do this kind of research.  Please, compare your own athletes so you would not lie to yourself regarding athletes’ performance.  Our Mexican athletes who barely practice the bike were unable to run after the bike calculated around 200 watts average in the peloton.  Remember, a World Series triathlon averages 370 watts on the bike to keep up with the first peloton (at least).
