Triathlon and the Brexit

It is very difficult to decide how much one has to carry or is able to carry.  The Brits for good or bad decided that enough is enough, I do not believe that this is a decision taken with the guts or a thoughtful one.  But there was a question in the mind of the Brits regarding how much they could tolerate and when they voted the balance between the pros and cons was where they took the decision; the situation is not going to change for decades or generations.  The same decision could be taken ten or twenty years from now because the same panorama will prevail; it takes decades to see changes.  It is a decision taken with fear but a very brave decision at the end; better now than later.  Our team have taken decisions similar to the one taken by the Brits.

Our environment is full of corruption, misconceptions about performance, misconception about science and wellbeing.  Nochixtlan is about an hour by car from where our kids live and it has been in the news.  Triathlon could not survive in Nochixtlan, many things are needed before something could flourish in Nochixtlan and surroundings; I would summaries it as a lot of work to do and education to perform well are needed.  We have done our own Brexit to be competitive worldwide.  We are familiar with the pros and cons of a Brexit but it is the only way to perform at our maximal capacity.  As Albert Einstein said: “the only rational way to educate is with the example.”

During 2012 Triathlon World Championship, we rented an apartment in London to make it easier for us.  We were surprised to see that there were ethnic places with no relation to Triathlon or any sport related activity.  They had no relationship to the Brownlees whatsoever. Queens in New York came to my mind, except that the police was not around and rules were different from the wasp culture.  Reminded me of Mexico City where there are houses interconnected with an entrance from a store in some neighborhoods.  I was stopped in one of the stores where I went to get my boarding passes.  They asked me and told me that I was seen walking around the neighborhood and they wanted to know where I was from and what I was doing there. My appearance can pass for many things: a brown Jew, a Mexican with a little of French flavor, a local with a mixed race. That image I keep from London.  The Brexit is understandable.  Diversity has been stretched too far in some cities in Great Britain and they have difficulties talking to each other because they have difficulties recognizing themselves as themselves.

Triathlon: How should it be?

We love what we saw at Leeds.  That is how the champions want us to be; fearless and to our maximum capacity.  The Brownlees planned and executed it perfectly; Alistair waited for Johnny as a plan “B.”  Wattage around 390 average from our measures.  This was a taste for Rio.

I took videos from www.triathlon.org with the purpose of illustrating my point.  I apologize if something else is needed for this purpose but the videos are needed.

Leaving the water two seconds in front of Alistair was not enough for Javier Gómez who lost the race when he is unable to follow Johnny.  Even a champion like Javier Gómez can lose a race if he is not ready to keep 400 watts for three minutes; that is what is needed to compete with the Brownlees.

Triathlon and Mohamed Ali

Ali is out of any box.  Because I am a Mexican I had a different relationship with blacks.  They are totally different from my expectation; some of them are spectacular, totally out of this world for the good.  Ali is that, I read the encounter he had with the Beatles.  It is real encounter of blacks vs whites in the US; a postmodern encounter:

But as the Beatles piled back into their limo, they had a considerably different opinion of the meeting. They reportedly told Benson that they’d never speak to him again, with one grousing that the whole experience had been “degrading. You made a fool of us!”
Back in the gym, Clay completed his workout, then stretched out in his dressing room for a rubdown and a little more verbal sparring with the press. After scolding a nearby reporter who doubted his chances against the fearsome Liston, Cassius eventually turned to Lipsyte with a puzzled look and asked about the four long-haired young Englishmen he’d been clowning with for the cameras earlier: “Who were those little sissies?”

Ali knew who he was and his grammar when talking was according to it; he was a brave man facing the unknown.  Sonny Liston felt without being touched, he lost the fight before fighting it.  What is the relationship with triathlon? We have the same problem in Mexico, we lost the race without starting it because we do not believe in what we do or we do not do what we know we should do.  Ignorance about the world (what a hard worker is for the competitive world) or ignorance about the steps needed to be successful.  Ali knew that when you are in the ring the opponent wants to harm (or kill) you badly; there is no place for doubters.  He lived his life following his grammar (Philosophy): that is what made him the greatest.
